THE GROW SHOW

The Berkshire Botanical Garden’s Grow Show will be held on August 13th and 14th, 2016. The show ties into this year’s exhibition at the Garden: Benched: Come Take A Seat in the Garden.  The flower arranging categories will focus on the idea of Sit A Spell, with each category being themed a relaxed, daydream-like state as its inspiration. These cues, taken from everything from sitting on a Chinese garden stool and rustic twig benches to a backyard bench and a view from the window into the wilds behind will serve as themes for the flower arranging categories. Submissions for an array of horticulture categories will be also be accepted for the show.

This year, we spotlight unusual bulbs in “Out of Africa: Discovering
African Bulbs Among New England Springtime Favorites”

Our Fitzpatrick Greenhouse is a harbinger of spring through March 17 when the public is invited to enjoy nearly 100 flowering bulbs in an exhibition, “Out of Africa: Discovering African Bulbs Among New England Springtime Favorites.”  The exhibit is open daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to regional springtime blooms such as narcissus, tulips and grape hyacinths, this year’s exhibit includes a collection of South African bulbs rarely seen in New England. Visitors are encouraged to stop by several times during the exhibition, as different bulbs will be blooming throughout the month.

Join horticulturist Rob Girard in the greenhouse on Saturday, March 11 for a Q & A on our South African bulb collection. Register online at berkshirebotanical.org or by calling 413 320-4794.

Opening Reception — PlayDate: Designers Re-imagine Play House Structures @ Berkshire Botanical
May 26 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Ten designers and builders interpret play house structures for Berkshire Botanical Garden’s summer exhibition, “PlayDate: Playhouses in the Garden” opens with a reception scheduled for Friday, May 26, 5-7 p.m. at the Garden in Stockbridge.

The PlayDate structures vary in size and theme, from a medieval fortress-style house, to an outdoor transparent “play room” and an English-style timber framed cottage. Other designs include a tree trunk transformed into a hobbit house, a 19th Century shepherd’s wagon, a teepee-style structure, a sanctuary, and an antique aviary tea party. A permanent installation at the Garden, the Martha Stewart Cottage, will receive a makeover for the exhibition, transforming the traditional garden cottage into a wild themed jungle room of ferns and other plants. A total of 12 structures will be included in the exhibition.

The exhibition is free with Garden admission. PlayDate will remain on display through September 24.
